Gypsy Costumes – A Great Choice for Halloween

This Halloween a gypsy costume may be just the thing. It is different, simple and certainly a lot of fun. Let your imagination run wild with the colors and styles you could mix and match. The trick is to dress in layers and use clothing that is loose and flowing. Add jewelry like bangles, long flowing necklaces, large earrings and ankle bracelets to enhance your outfit. Use colorful sashes accent the waist (and also to hold daggers). Women could drape several sheer scarves from their waist to hang down in points around a solid colored skirt. Include headbands, bandanas and even eye patches for that gypsy pirate look. Purples, blues, greens, bright yellows, reds and blacks are the most popular colors and will make your outfit really stand out.



Gypsies have developed the reputation of thieves, dishonest, lustful – a race of wanderers and vagabonds. Most stories portray them as a race with loose morals and few scruples. But in reality this is an over generalization that only applies to a few bad apples. But hey, can’t you find that in any culture?
The technical term for a gypsy is “Roma” and they originally came from India. They were first called “gypsy” by the Europeans who thought they had come from Egypt. Today, Gypsies can be found all over the world, they are predominantly found in Central and Eastern Europe. A common feature of gypsies in fiction is their magic: fortune-telling, curses, and the like. The specific beliefs and cultures vary from group to group, as they have spread far and wide without a collective location. Most modern Roma have absorbed local religion and culture, so a modern gypsy curse would be unlikely. The traditional beliefs were centered on their Goddess Kali. Her symbol was a triangle. They believed in the power of curses, healing rituals, good luck charms, and reincarnation.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the basic dress of the woman was a simple robe gathered at the neck worn over an under gown made of chemise. They also wore a length of cloth which was draped down the back, around the opposite waist, up the front and tied at the shoulder (think Roman toga). A turban was worn on the head.
As time went on, fashions changed. For the most part, gypsies actually dressed very similar to the peasants of the area in which they traveled and cultural dress of the time. Most of the style of gypsy clothing that we picture today probably came from the Renaissance period when laced vests, flounced skirts, men's breeches and pirate shirts were more popular.
History holds that gypsies typically married between the ages of 9 and 14. Marriage to an outsider was strongly discouraged. The ceremony consisted of joining hands in front of a chief or elder and promising to remain true to each other, or in other tribes simply jumping over a broomstick together in the presence of family.

Gypsies are famous for their musicians, dancers, and fortune-tellers. Drabardi is the term for a fortune-teller, though they only read fortunes for non-gypsies. Other traditional occupations are metalworking, horse trading, and animal training and doctoring. As these skills aren't as needed in modern day, many gypsies live in poverty.
